Debate rules and ethics

Every debate is a fervent discussion on any controversial statement (topic). In order for the discussion to be as civilized and efficient as possible it is important to know and follow the rules of a debate. Here are some basic (major) rules of a debate each debater must know:

Ten rules of a debate:

  • Each debate should be considered as an exchange of structural ideas within mutually respectful atmosphere.
  • Debate is not only a tool of expression one's position, but also a tool to convince. The major aim of the debater is to convince the opponent, judges and audience that his standpoint (position) is true.
  • As a result of a debate both teams should try to achieve general, mutually beneficial and acceptable decision.
  • One must be respectful towards opponent and audience.
  • Statements should be proved using proper facts. Each debater should possess fact quoting ethics.
  • Debate should be a result of material gathering and formulating of arguments based on the research.
  • While developing own position it is also necessary to be familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of the opposite position.
  • Criticism shoudn’t be considered just as denial of argumentation, it is aimed to reveal the arguments from mistakes, which makes it stronger and more convincing.
  • Despite of different opinions one should listen patiently and be tolerant towards each other. One should be tolerant towards point of views of others even if it’s controversial to his/her own opinion.
  • Debate and discussed topic shouldn’t be personalized, as it is not interpersonal, but only ideological contraposition.
